Classroom Environment
Transform your classroom with learning-focused designs!
Classroom Dynamics and Design
As a teacher or administrator, your primary goal is to ensure that every student gets the very best education you can offer. There are hundreds of elements that contribute to a student’s ability to learn, and it’s up to you to optimize as many of those elements as you can. You can’t control everything, but one thing you do have control over is the physical environment of your school, particularly the classrooms.
Tips for Good Classroom Design
We have heard it time and time again from experienced teachers: good classroom design can contribute to better classroom dynamics and enhanced learning. And it’s not just helpful for students. Teachers spend all day in the classroom too. A good environment will have positive effects on a teacher’s mood and ability to teach well. The tips below will help you create an enriching educational experience with better design!
Use colour strategically – While a monotone, monochromatic, or neutral look might be chic at best or unobtrusive at worst, it’s better suited to an office or home, not a classroom. Most kids (especially young kids) love colour—the more the better. Colour provides great visual stimulation for young children. Bright and happy colours are mood-boosting, helping everyone to keep the morale up. Here are some ways to add in colour:
Older students will likely appreciate a little less colour since colourful interiors are associated with younger ages, but even secondary or university students will perform better in a learning environment that uses colour well.
Consider the lighting—If possible, you should provide natural light in a classroom. You’ll also want a degree of control over the lighting level in the room. Too much light and your classroom will be uncomfortably bright; too little and your students will have to strain to see, which could result in energy levels dropping or losing focas. Windows should have blinds that can be opened or closed depending on the desired light level.
Provide flexibility—It’s hard to foster creativity in a space where everything is set in stone and never changes! If possible, make the layout of the classroom flexible: allow for moveable desks and tables, chairs, decorative elements, etc. Allowing students to change up the design of the classroom themselves is also an excellent way to foster creativity and learning. It will give students a feeling of ownership over the space that can boost self-confidence and learning.
Take advantage of every surface— Walls, floors, desks, chairs, windows and doors—all these pieces combine to make up your classroom environment. Think about how you can maximize everything to your advantage.
